Orla & Patrick — Castle Durrow Wedding, Co. Laois
Some days just line up perfectly. Orla and Patrick’s Castle Durrow wedding was one of those days, great church, great crowd, a very good detour on the way to the venue, and then one of the best sunset windows I’ve had all year. Five minutes. That’s all it took.
Getting Ready at Home
Orla got ready at home, which is always a good start. There’s something about a family home on a wedding morning that you just can’t replicate in a hotel room, the chaos, the familiarity, the people who’ve known the bride her whole life all crowded into one space. It makes for real photographs.
St Brigid’s Church, Lisdowney
The ceremony was held at St Brigid’s Church in Lisdowney, a beautiful, intimate church that sits quietly in the Kilkenny countryside. It’s the kind of ceremony venue that doesn’t try too hard. The light inside is soft, the space is honest, and it lets the moment breathe.
Bob’s Bar — Best Decision of the Day
On the way from the church to Castle Durrow, the bridal party made a very sensible stop at Bob’s Bar. A quick pint, the whole group together, no schedule, no photographer barking instructions. Just people enjoying themselves. Those are always some of my favourite shots of the day, everyone relaxed, guard completely down. If you’re getting married near Lisdowney, I’d highly recommend factoring this in.
Speeches in the Sunshine at Castle Durrow
The speeches were held at the back of the castle in glorious sunshine. Castle Durrow has this great open space behind the castle that, on a sunny day, is genuinely hard to beat, the stone of the castle behind, the gardens stretching out, and everyone just there, fully present. The light was perfect and the speeches were everything good speeches should be.
Five Minutes and a Sunset
After the meal I brought Orla and Patrick out for a few couple portraits. The sky had turned, that deep golden light you get on a summer evening in Laois when the conditions are just right. We were out there for five minutes. Five minutes, and we got some of the best shots of the day.
That’s the thing about Castle Durrow in summer ,you don’t need long. The venue does the work. You just need to be ready when the light arrives.
