Tinakilly House Wedding Photographer’s Guide | Co. Wicklow

If you’ve just booked Tinakilly House for your wedding, welcome. You’ve made an excellent choice. I’ve photographed many weddings at Tinakilly and it’s a venue I genuinely love working at. The grounds are beautiful, the light in the afternoon is particularly good, and the whole place has an ease to it that tends to rub off on couples.

This guide covers what I’ve learned about photographing at Tinakilly House, the ceremony options, the best spots on the grounds, how the day tends to flow, and what to think about when it comes to your photography. If you’re in the early stages of planning, it should be genuinely useful.

About Tinakilly House

Tinakilly House is a Victorian country house hotel set in seven acres of landscaped gardens in Rathnew, Co. Wicklow — about an hour from Dublin city. It’s one of the most popular wedding venues in Wicklow, and for good reason: the combination of the house itself, the manicured grounds, and the surrounding countryside gives you a huge amount to work with photographically without ever needing to leave the property.

Ceremony Options at Tinakilly House

Tinakilly offers both indoor and outdoor ceremony options, and both work well photographically.

The outdoor lawn ceremony is the one I see most often and on a good day it’s hard to beat. The light in the afternoon, the open sky, the backdrop of the house and gardens behind the couple, it photographs beautifully. The key thing to be aware of is the sun position in the afternoon. Depending on the time of year, the angle of light on the lawn can be quite direct in the early afternoon, so a 2pm ceremony tends to work better than midday. Worth discussing with your venue coordinator when locking in your ceremony time.

If the weather lets you down, I have captured some great ceremonies in the marquee. The light pouring in from the big windows really helps. It’s a big space so there’s plenty of room to get all the best angles for the photos.

The Grounds — Best Spots for Photos

Tinakilly’s seven acres give you plenty of options for couple portraits and bridal party shots without ever feeling like you’re covering the same ground twice.

The spots I return to most:

  • The front of the house — the Victorian facade is a strong backdrop and works well in almost any light
  • The walled garden area — if accessible, it gives a more intimate, enclosed feel
  • The tree-lined paths — particularly good in late afternoon when the light filters through
  • The open lawn — works especially well for wider bridal party shots
  • The Indoors – Lets not forget the indoors, with big windows and a sweeping staircase you won’t be stuck if the weather lets you down.

Getting Ready at Tinakilly House

Tinakilly’s rooms are well suited for getting ready photography, good natural light and enough space to work without feeling cramped. If you’re getting ready on-site, I’d recommend having hair and makeup finished with at least 45 minutes to spare before you need to leave for the ceremony. That gives us time for portraits in your room, detail shots, and a relaxed moment before the day shifts up a gear.

I have a zoom call with every couple three weeks out from their wedding date to go over your timeline, If there’s anything I can suggest, I will.

How the Day Typically Flows

A typical Tinakilly wedding day looks something like this:

  • Morning getting ready (on-site or nearby) I arrive in pleanty of time to allow for travel to the site or church.
  • Ceremony on site (outdoor lawn or indoor) or your choice of church.
  • Drinks reception on the grounds
  • Couple portraits — usually 15-20 minutes during the drinks reception. Another option is a first look before the ceremony.
  • Bridal party shots
  • Dinner and evening reception

The drinks reception is usually your best window for couple portraits, guests are occupied, the light in the late afternoon is at its most flattering, and the grounds are at their best. I’d always recommend keeping this window protected in your timeline rather than filling it with table visits or speeches.
