Slane Castle Wedding Photography.
Just 20 minutes drive from Dublin, Slane Castle sits on the banks of the river Boyne in Co Meath. This castle has been host to many great concerts over the last couple of decades but lately it is opened up as one of Ireland’s most exclusive wedding venues.
Megan and Austin come from the States but decided to make Ireland their home in the last few years. Their guests flew in from all over the States and indeed the world, to witness this magnificent event.
I arrived at the castle about three hours before the ceremony which was to be held in the grand Burton Hall. As both Megan and Austin were getting ready in the castle it was easy to capture all the excitement and fun.
Megan and Austin decided to go for a “first look” before the ceremony which made for some real tender images. The “first look” is a normal part of the day in the USA.
The wedding ceremony was so beautiful. The music and singing was just divine.
Even though it was very cold outside Megan and Austin wanted to get some photos at the front of the castle with the bridal party. I knew I wouldn’t get long outside but we were wrapped up in a few minutes.
It was an amazing wedding, a joy to witness, one I’ll never forget.
Megan & Austin’s Story
Where did you meet:
We met in San Francisco in May 2011 at a Memorial Day BBQ in Golden Gate Park. We had mutual friends and chatted casually at the BBQ.We would continue to cross paths within this same circle of friends for a few years, until we found ourselves within a smaller group of friends at a concert in May 2014. We hit it off and ended up spending quite a bit of the weekend together doing more fun activities with friends. Following that weekend, Austin asked me to dinner and the rest is history.
Tell us about the proposal:
I was in the process of moving to Ireland in a few months for a Masters program & we spent a lot of time together before I moved and kept in touch during my first year in Ireland, meeting up whenever we had an opportunity to travel together.
One of those opportunities was a trip to Berlin on the June bank holiday weekend 2015 where we decided to be together and see how our relationship would unfold. A couple months later, Austin was due to return to the San Francisco, and instead made the decision to move to Ireland indefinitely.
On Oct. 15th 2016, Austin took me back to Berlin for the weekend and proposed to me in one of our favourite neighborhoods – Prenzlauer Berg – and proposed after dinner just outside the gates of Kollwitzplatz.
Prior to bringing me to Berlin, Austin flew from Kansas City, MO (where we was on a business trip) to California, to ask my Father’s permission to marry me in person.
Austin had my engagement ring made and it was important to him to incorporate Irish/Celtic symbolism into the design, since Ireland has been our first home together.
Why Slane Castle?
We wanted something very unique for our guests travelling from overseas, and also really wanted a NYE wedding. Slane Castle was able to offer us both, and we loved that we could host our wedding & reception at the Castle, without needing guests to travel between multiple buildings outside or use a marquee. The atmosphere of our wedding there was that we were truly using the castle and every room in it, and guests were free to make themselves feel comfortable there, and relax and enjoy (party!) in the multiple rooms. The number bedrooms in the castle were large enough to accommodate the wedding party, and there was plenty of nearby accommodation for guests. Also, with Slane’s big Enchanted Kingdom Christmas event prior, we could choose how much Christmas decor influence we wanted to keep for our day or take down. They were just so flexible, and it was just perfect for us!

Thoughts about your day:
In our relationship, Austin usually runs on time (or early) and Megan runs on her own timetable. 😉 Not on our wedding day! There were some stressful moments in the Groom’s suite on getting Austin’s bow tie tied just right, and actually had him running late on our wedding day!
We really loved that Harlequin let & encouraged some of our guests to join in with the band. One of our groomsmen is an avid drummer & he was able to play a couple songs with the band, which was really special to him & us.
Lastly, we absolutely loved all of our suppliers & the staff at Slane Castle and Fitzer’s (their catering company). Everything is absolutely perfect on the day.
And even the little things – like my veil coming off during the ceremony – added to the uniqueness of the day, and shows that even if something doesn’t go exactly how you expected it to go, it goes it’s exactly how it’s meant to go – because it’s your wedding day.
